What does one compliance failure actually cost?

Most food operators dramatically under-estimate the cost of a single allergen incident, recall, or audit failure. The fine is rarely the largest line item. This calculator estimates the operational, contractual, and reputational impact for your business size.

Estimated total exposure
EUR 0

This is a directional estimate built from publicly reported food-recall economics, FSAI / FSA / FDA enforcement bands, and typical foodservice contract clauses. It does not constitute legal or financial advice. Actual exposure varies with insurance cover, contract terms, jurisdiction, and the operational facts of the incident.

What the model assumes

  • Direct fine band based on the chosen jurisdiction and incident severity. EU and UK fines are unlimited on conviction; the calculator uses the central tendency of recent published cases.
  • Recall execution cost at roughly 8 to 14 percent of one site's monthly revenue per affected site, covering product write-off, communication, logistics, and re-stocking.
  • Operational disruption at 30 to 60 percent revenue impact across the affected estate for 5 to 14 days, plus 10 to 20 percent recovery-period reduction.
  • Brand and contract impact at 1 to 3 contracts at risk in regulated procurement environments, with re-tender displacement losses across the contract life.
  • Legal and professional fees including external counsel, food-safety consultants, PR support, and insurance excess.

What this calculator deliberately omits

Personal injury settlements, bereavement costs, criminal sanctions on individual directors, and the cost of running parallel manual record reconstruction during an investigation. These dwarf the modelled figure in serious cases.

The shorter answer

For a 10-site operator, a confirmed allergen incident typically costs more than five years of GNV at full enterprise pricing. A multi-site recall typically costs more than ten. The cost of compliance has rarely been the question. The cost of provable compliance is.
